MISSING
The Jaryd Atadero Story
What Would You Do?

On the winding trails of the Big South Trail, hikers are captivated by the rich Colorado beauty. Beauty, however, can have a dark side. Easily entranced by the surrounding nature, one can easily become misdirected; such is the story of Jaryd Atadero, the three-year-old son of Allyn Atadero. A day celebrating the beauty of God’s handiwork turns into a father’s worst nightmare as the sun sets on his only son, lost in the Colorado Mountains. A highly publicized search breaks into a national story as reports surfaced concerning Jaryd’s whereabouts. Did Jaryd fall prey to a territorial mountain lion? Was he a victim of the elements? Did someone take Jaryd off the mountain? Missing is the personal account of a father’s painful search to discover the truth. Accompany author and father Allyn Atadero as he ascends the mountain with hope, wades through grief and sorrow, and, by faith, makes his final descent in Missing: The Jaryd Atadero Story.

With the support of Rep. Sara Gagliardi, D-Arvada, and state Sen. Paula Sandoval, D-Denver, the latest manifestation of Allyn Atadero’s efforts is the Colorado Recreational Safety Awareness Week observed from Sept. 8-14 each year, created through a proclamation by Gov. Bill Ritter. The initial Recreational Safety Awareness Week was kicked off at Falcon Bluffs Middle School on Sept. 8, 2008 and had representatives from Christy Sports, Colorado Ski and Golf, Whistle Away Crime and West Metro Fire Rescue in attendance. Read Gov. Bill Ritter’s Letter to Allyn.
Allyn Atadero is currently working with members of the Colorado Senate and Legislature to introduce legislation to develop an approved state trackers’ certification. This list would be used to identify human trackers who posses skills and experience worthy of allowing them to be deployed in emergency search environments. During Jaryd’s search, several trackers were turned away after their services were volunteered. A Colorado certification would authenticate trackers and provide law enforcement a means to validate those willing to assist families in need.
Allyn was called to testify before the committee conducting hearings concerning Colorado’s Amber Alert implementation. Allyn was then invited to be with Governor Owens during the Amber Bill signing ceremony. Josallyn, Jaryd’s sister, sat next to the Governor as he signed the Bill into law.
Allyn has spoken at the Colorado Capitol during the past four years of Colorado’s Missing Children’s week. He is currently a board member of Whistle Away Crime, a nonprofit organization developed to promote safety among children, and he plans to remain active in issues concerning missing children.
Missing is Allyn’s story about Jaryd’s disappearance. As the story faded from the national spotlight, the struggle to discover the truth about Jaryd’s whereabouts continued. There can never be information that brings closure to a situation concerning the tragedy of a child, but the proper information could eventually allow a parent to move on with a new purpose.
Allyn has endorsed the Child Locator by BrickHouse Security. You may have seen the Duracell "Power to Protect" camaign comercial advertising this amazing safety device. To read more about this product, please visit the BrickHouse Security website.
